Summer Artisan Market – Sunday 9^th August

We have the ever-popular Lincolnshire Makers Summer Artisan Market coming up on Sunday 9th August. With a fabulous selection of makers and producers it is a day not to be missed!

Farm safaris around the estate on the tractor & trailer will be running throughout the day and some can be booked in advance here.  Our prices for this 45-minute fully guided experience have reduced to £5 per person (same price as a child’s ticket last year). Tickets will also be available on the day from our stand. A selection of cuts of our fresh venison will also be available to purchase from us at the event.

Sunflowers – at the Artisan Market

Our sunflower event was a great success and we were delighted to welcome so many visitors to the field over the last couple of weeks. Whilst the sunflowers have now passed their best, visitors to the artisan market will be welcome to walk through the trail as part of their entry to the artisan market. We do ask that if you pick any sunflowers these are paid for (£1 per stem) at the Stourton estates stand before you leave.

More than just a Food & Drink Fayre – Sunday 13^th September

More than just a… Food and Drink Fayre is being held on Sunday 13th September. Here you can discover fantastic local food, meet the makers and enjoy a great selection of family activities on the farm too…. You will hear more about this event on social media in the next few weeks but for now this is a date to have firmly in your diaries!

Weddings & Parties

In July the Safari tent has hosted two beautiful and very different wedding celebrations as well as a super 21st birthday party. The space and setting provides a brilliant blank canvas to celebrate in your own personal style.

Logs & Landscaping Products

With the hose pipe ban and continuing hot weather, now is a great time to conserve the remaining moisture in the ground by applying woodchip or bark as a surface mulch to your borders to keep your gardens looking lovely.

We are also have kiln dried logs back in stock and will deliver these to you so you can get them stacked ahead of winter.

The prices for logs are currently the same as last season, however we will be looking to review this come 1^st September so now is a good time to get your order placed & delivered before the end of August.

All  of our logs and landscaping products are available on our website for you to order online and get stocked up.

On the Farm

Harvest is now well underway. As we write this on 28th July, we are only a few days away from finishing. The hot, dry weather has helped keep crop drying to a minimum, but it has also reduced yields. We will share the full harvest results next month.

Once the combine has cleared some fields, we have been spreading farmyard manure from our own cattle, along with some imported manure through a “straw for muck” agreement. This helps improve soil health by adding organic matter and provides useful nutrients for the next crops.

The dry, hard ground has made it difficult to work the manure into the soil, so we are hoping for some rain soon. Moisture would soften the ground and help us establish cover crops and oilseed rape.

We have also been mowing and topping some fields to prepare them for wheat to be direct drilled in the autumn. Grass clippings and other residues need careful management, as they can affect young seedlings as they emerge.

The cattle are settled out in the fields, although there is not much lush grass left now. If the dry conditions continue, we may need to give them extra silage. There are still 20 cattle in the shed, and they are due to leave during August. The rest of the group have performed well after enjoying a long summer grazing outside.

Harvest is one of the busiest times of year on the farm. We understand that large machinery on the roads can be frustrating, but this only lasts for a few weeks each year. Please be patient, allow extra time for your journey, and give farm machinery plenty of space so everyone can travel safely.

Deer Diary

The deer are making great use of the woodland shelter in the park lands and swimming ponds in this hot and dry weather. Sadly, there is very little quality grass for them, so we are feeding them silage that we had saved for the winter and they are gobbling it up!  Hopefully after we have got harvest in it will rain & replenish the ground for grass and all our gardens!
