Our deer are reared with high welfare standards and a strong focus on sustainability, producing naturally lean, flavourful venison.

Fresh venison is available monthly and includes a great selection of cuts making venison a great choice from week-day suppers to Sunday roasts and dinner party delights!

Venison JointOur next fresh venison delivery will be on Friday 13th March and the following is available

  • Venison loin / fillet
  • Haunch and rump steaks
  • Venison haunch and sirloin roasting joints
  • Venison mince & casserole steak
  • Estate honey & our very own free range eggs

Please place your orders via this link and Tina will be in touch to arrange payment and confirm an approximate delivery time.

We look forward to re-opening Stourton Woods for our events in May and sharing more of our produce with the local community.

Chickens & our Free Range Eggs

Due to bird flu precautions in the area, our friendly hens have temporarily been housed in a secure shed at the farm. They continue to be well cared for and are enjoying supplementary feeds of sunflower seeds and wheat, which they are clearly appreciating!

We will shortly be opening our honesty Eggloo on Clays Lane (on the way to the WGB and Stourton Woods main entrance).

Our farm fresh free range eggs are:

  • Mixed size
  • Collected daily by hand
  • Produced by well-cared-for hens
  • Fed from UK gown feeds and farm by products
  • Available on an honesty basis

They make a delicious breakfast – Antony can confirm they are best enjoyed simply boiled… with or without soldiers!

On the Farm

You may have noticed that February brought a further 60mm of rainfall, with predominantly cloudy and wet conditions!  As a result, fieldwork has been quite limited.

Some fertiliser has been applied to our oilseed rape and selected wheat fields when conditions have allowed. Despite the challenging weather, crops are generally looking encouraging, thanks in part to the favourable autumn drilling season.

We are preparing to drill:

  • Spring barley
  • Spring oats

These will be sown as soon as soil conditions improve. Timely drilling is essential to maintain quality – particularly as our oats are intended for human consumption and our barley for malting markets.

For our spring barley, we are using home-saved seed. This has been professionally cleaned using gravity separation and screening processes to remove small grains and chaff. A nutritional seed dressing has been applied to support early establishment, and the seed has been stored safely in 1 tonne bags ready for drilling.

There is still some sugar beet in the ground, being lifted at the time of press(!) before the beet factory in Newark closes in early March. The prolonged wet weather has made harvesting more challenging for many growers this season.

We have also welcomed a further batch of Aberdeen Angus cross calves, who have settled well onto their herbal ley silage and cereal-based diet. Our first group of cattle continue to grow strongly, look very well and are now averaging 465kg.

February has also been a month of planning for the year ahead, including cropping decisions and Stewardship / SFI areas for 2026/27. These plans include winter bird food plots and pollen and nectar mixtures to support biodiversity.  We continue to provide supplementary seed mixes for wild birds throughout the winter months and are maintaining feeders until spring is fully established and there’s more for the birds to find naturally.

Deer Diary

Winter feeding continues, which remains a challenge in wet ground conditions. We are using the smaller Kubota tractor in the parks, as its lighter footprint helps reduce soil damage. The straw chopper has also proved invaluable for both feeding and bedding.

The deer have become ‘twitchy’ clearly sensing the changing season and are becoming more alert ahead of their planned release back into the parks in early April, weather permitting.
